Director's Statement

By Lumka Sibeko

Muffin Top is a coming of age film that seeks to explore how one's insecurities and doubts hinder their ability to make progress in their lives. Most, if not all, of us have had moments where we’ve doubted our capabilities in any skilled orientated area of our lives, much to our detriment. It’s a difficult spot to find yourself in, especially if you’ve excelled in that particular area and there seems to be no tangible proof or reason for you to feel the way you do.

Impostor syndrome involves feelings of intellectual self-doubt that often occur to people in challenging new roles or in the wake of personal success. It’s a very common phenomenon but not a lot of people know what they’re feeling when they go through it. I definitely felt like this, especially in high school. Growing up and going to a predominately white schools and being one of very few black girls attending , I’ve experienced imposter syndrome and although I was working hard, I always felt that I had to work 10 times harder than my whiter counterparts to succeed.

I was inspired to write this story because of my experiences growing up but also I wanted to use the lens of a woman of colour. Media representation of women of colour has always been very limited. The few coming of age style films with woman of colour as leads are almost always about struggle and heartache. I was tired of only seeing that the only way for woman of colour (W.O.C) to find happiness or a resolution was through immense suffering. Although those stories are valid, I wanted to see these women in a different context, to create a light hearted film where W.O.C could see themselves as soft, funny, goofy or even just going through normal everyday issues.

I believe the exploration of this topic and in the manner in which we have tackled it will make for a sweet, charming and most importantly, entertaining viewing experience.
